The British Ministry of Defense comments in a morning report that as a result of the invasion of Ukraine and the failure to achieve the set goals, the Russian army is now “significantly weaker, both in terms of equipment and perception.”
It is noted that recovery from this blow will become even more difficult due to the West sanctions against Moscow. “This will have a lasting impact on Russia’s ability to deploy conventional military forces,” the statement added.
Giving the background to this estimate, the British Ministry states that between 2005 and 2018 the Russian defense budget almost doubled, with investments in various high-tech aviation, land and naval systems.
Since 2008, this upgrade has been part of the expanded ‘New Look’ military modernization program.
“Nevertheless,” the Defense Ministry said, “the modernization of equipment has not allowed Russia to dominate over Ukraine. “Mistakes in both strategic planning and operational execution have left Russia unable to translate numerical power into a decisive advantage.”
