Former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva told the American magazine Time that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is as responsible as Russian Vladimir Putin for the war in his country.
In the interview published this Wednesday (4), Lula said that Zelensky could have negotiated more with Russia, but he turned the conflict into a spectacle.
”And now, sometimes I watch the president of Ukraine on television like he’s partying, getting a standing ovation by all the parliaments, you know? This guy is as responsible as Putin. He’s as responsible as Putin. Because in a war does not have just one culprit”, said
“He appears on television in the morning, in the afternoon, at night, he appears in the English parliament, in the German parliament, in the French parliament as if he were campaigning. He needed to be more concerned with the negotiating table,” he said.
“He wanted war. If he [não] wanted war, he would have negotiated a little more. And so. I criticized Putin when he was in Mexico City, saying it was wrong to invade. But I don’t think anyone is looking to contribute to peace. People are stoking hatred against Putin. That won’t fix it! A deal needs to be encouraged.”
Time published its cover on Wednesday, which says that Lula is preparing his “second act”, the new stage of his political life. The magazine’s statement reads that “Brazil’s most popular president returns from political exile with a promise to save the nation” and “Lula tells Time about Ukraine, Bolsonaro and Brazil’s fragile democracy”.
