Steve Hodge, who owned the jersey, then lent it to the National Football Museum in Manchester for two decades. After Maradona’s death in 2020, Hodge said the shirt was not for sale.
So the 59-year-old decided to sell it earlier this year and Sotheby’s arranged the auction by submitting bids from April 20 to May 4. The winning offer reached 7,142,500 pounds or 8,490,000 euros, making it the most expensive sports jersey in history.

The jersey of the great Brazilian Pelé from the 1970 World Cup final was the most expensive football jersey sold at auction, according to the Guinness World Record. It fetched 7. 157,750 in 2002, three times the expected price.

Maradona, who led Argentina to the 1986 World Cup, died at the age of 60 on November 25, 2020 due to heart failure.
