So the 59-year-old decided to sell it earlier this year and Sotheby’s arranged the auction by submitting bids from April 20 to May 4. The winning offer reached 7,142,500 pounds or 8,490,000 euros, making it the most expensive sports jersey in history.

The jersey of the great Brazilian Pelé from the 1970 World Cup final was the most expensive football jersey sold at auction, according to the Guinness World Record. It fetched 7. 157,750 in 2002, three times the expected price.

“I have been a proud owner of this item for more than 35 years, since Diego and I changed shirts after the famous race,” said Hodge. “It was an absolute privilege to play against one of the most important and wonderful footballers of all time.

Maradona, who led Argentina to the 1986 World Cup, died at the age of 60 on November 25, 2020 due to heart failure.
