The trial of Russian soldier Vadim Sisimarin, who is accused of killing a 62-year-old citizen in the Sumy region, began on Friday in Kiev’s Solomensky district court.

This is the first trial in Ukraine of a Russian soldier for the murder of a civilian during the war. The 21-year-old defendant will be tried under Article 438 of the Ukrainian Penal Code – “Violation of laws and customs of war.”

He faces a sentence of 10 to 15 years or life imprisonment. The trial was adjourned until May 18. Two more Russian prisoners of war are to be tried immediately.

“Russian soldiers are beginning to be held accountable for their crimes in Ukraine,” said Anton Gerastshenko, an adviser to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry.

According to the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office, more from 10,700 crimes have been recorded since the start of the war by the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, headed by Irina Venediktova, and the first cases have now been filed or are ready to be submitted two months after the war.
