NATO Foreign Ministers will meet at Berlin, Germanythis weekend to discuss their long-term strategy, along with possible prospects for joining the Atlantic Alliance Finland and Sweden.
NATO has seen a sudden rise in its geopolitical importance since Russian invasion of Ukraine and may soon have new members.
The informal Berlin summit comes just days after the Finnish president and prime minister announced that they were in favor of their long-neutral membership in NATOwith the official decision expected to be announced tomorrow, Sunday, while neighboring Sweden is also expected to announce its decision on its NATO membership in the coming days.
Swedish Foreign Minister Anne Linde and its Finnish counterpart Peka Haavisto are expected to attend this summit in Berlin.
At the two-day meeting, hosted by the German Foreign Minister Analena Berbock and with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in attendance, the final phase of negotiations on NATO’s Strategic Concept, the alliance’s guiding document for the coming years, is expected to begin.
The Strategic Concept is expected to provide a long-term response to the growing tensions with the Russiaincluding a clarification of how to further strengthen NATO’s presence in Eastern Europe and, for the first time, guidance on China.
The final draft is expected to be adopted by its leaders NATO at their upcoming summit scheduled for Madrid in June.
The issue of how to respond to the consequences of the Russian war is also at the heart of the talks at the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting that began yesterday and will end today in northern Germany.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmitro Koulempawho took part in the summit, warned against a breakdown in negotiations on imposing an embargo on Russian oil, while Britain at the summit voted in favor of providing more weapons to Ukraine.
The EU also announced yesterday that it plans to provide an additional € 500 million in aid to the Ukrainian armed forces, which is expected to be approved by EU foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday.
