Electricity exports from Russia to Finland stopped An official from the Finnish power grid told AFP on Friday night that a Russian supplier had made an announcement in this regard.
The company responsible for the sale of Russian electricity in Finland, RAO Nordic, announced yesterday its intention to stop its deliveries at midnightciting overdue debts, as Finland prepares to announce its NATO bid.
“We are forced to suspend electricity imports from May 14,” said RAO Nordic, a subsidiary of Russia’s state-owned energy company Inter RAO. “RAO Nordic is not able to make payments for electricity imported from Russia.”
“This is a state of emergency that is happening for the first time in over 20 years (…) We hope the situation will improve soon and deliveries from Russia will resume,” he explained.
RAO Nordic is a major importer of electricity from Russia to the Scandinavian markets, and has been active in the European Union since 2002.
The threatening launch was Russia’s first reaction to the news that Finland and Sweden are preparing to abandon their neutrality and join NATO.
Moscow had long warned that such a move was interpreted by it as a hostile move and had moved troops to the border in an attempt to intimidate Finland.
In the midst of this “explosive” climate, the possible “retaliation” and “responses” from Moscow may include the interruption of gas supplies to Finland.
