Sudan: Political parties have rejected the prime minister’s agreement with the military

by

Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok, who resigned from the army in late October, returned to his post today following an agreement he signed with General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, but the reconciliation did not reassure the thousands. protest against the coup.

At the Khartoum presidential palace, outside which security forces fired tear gas to disperse the crowd, Hamdock and Burhan signed an agreement to share power, vowing to continue the transition to democracy.

Earlier, however, those organizations that ended the 30-year military-Islamist dictatorship of Omar al-Bashir with the 2019 uprising announced that they rejected “any agreement that would allow the coup to remain in the midst of any transitional government.” This announcement was made by the Sudanese Association of Professionals, the spearhead of the 2019 revolution.

About 40 protesters have been killed and hundreds more injured since the October coup.

After signing the agreement, Hamdock promised to “stop the bloodshed” in Sudan. Burhan, for his part, “thanked him for his patience.” Hamdock, a former UN economist, was placed under house arrest and released just this morning.

Under the agreement, ministers and other politicians arrested on October 25th will also be released, but it was not immediately clear when that would happen.

As on the first day of the coup, the Forces for Freedom and Change (FCC), Sudan’s largest political coalition, rejected the deal. “We reiterate clearly that there is no negotiation or cooperation (…) with the coup leaders,” the FCC said, calling for the generals to be brought to justice for the bloody crackdown on protesters.

The confusion intensifies after the announcement of the Oumma party, which stated that “it rejects any political agreement that does not address the roots of the crisis created by the military coup”. It should be noted that Fadla Burma, one of the mediators who negotiated the agreement between the army and Hamdock, comes from this party.
