Panel SA: Dispute over vacancy in a medical course will end up in the STF

by

The imbroglio about the creation of vacancies in medical courses ended up in the STF (Federal Supreme Court).

Anup (Association of Private Universities) has filed a lawsuit with the Supreme Court to prevent the analysis of injunctions from private universities that ask the MEC (Ministry of Education and Culture) to create medical vacancies in existing courses.

The entity asks that 180 lawsuits in progress on the subject be interrupted. The measure would prevent the opening of up to 20,000 new places in medical courses at private universities. Instead of new vacancies, the entity defends the opening of courses.

In the petition, Anup recalls that the More Doctors Law was created in 2013 to encourage the opening of vacancies in cities with few doctors, and, in 2018, a moratorium was enacted that prevents the creation of new courses until April 2023.

To continue the opening of vacancies in medical courses, private universities continue to appeal to the courts.

“If the Ministry of Education had kept the doors open for the authorization processes, avoiding unduly privileging those who already have a medical degree, none of this would be happening”, says Edgar Larry, president of Abrafi (Brazilian Association of Faculty Maintainers), another sector entity.
