German Press: The lessons of the Greek crisis for Europe

by

Süddeutsche Zeitung’s commentary on the end of enhanced supervision and the lessons of the Greek crisis

“Among the many European crises in recent years, the drama of the euro and the debt crisis stands out, which brought the European Union to the brink of the abyss from 2010 onwards, almost causing an explosion in over-indebted Greece in 2015. The crisis is not completely over. , even if the country is freed without fanfare from ‘enhanced EU supervision’ (…) The country is still over-indebted, too many live on the edge of poverty. But growth and employment prove the success of the reforms” the newspaper observes in its extensive commentary Süddeutsche Zeitung.

Looking back on her timeline Greek debt crisisof its consequences, but also in its imprint on Germanyobserves among other things: “Today the geopolitical risk of a Greek exit from the euro and possibly from the EU would perhaps be easier to understand. Turkey could involve its neighbor in war, Russia and China could be happy about the open doors that would exist in the south-eastern corner of Europe. They could (…) On the other hand, in Europe it would be necessary to take seriously the lessons of this great crisis. Despite stabilization mechanisms and early warning systems, the Eurozone is still far from crisis-proof (…) There are more than enough over-indebted countries in the EU today. In times of pandemics and crises, fiscal discipline is abolished even in debt-ridden Germany . There is no shortage of crises in Europe and national debts can very quickly become the biggest burden for the community again”.

Holidays in Greece are expensive for Greeks

Report about the vacation in Greece, which German tourists enjoy, but for them Greeks are unapproachable due to high cost we read on the website tagesschau.de of the first program of German television. “Ticket prices only for ships, which are one of the most important means of transport in Greece, have already tripled this year (…) The situation is similar with hotel prices. However, tourists from Germany have a decisive advantage,” the report says. According to Manolis Tsakalakis from the Union of Greek Hoteliers, Greek hotels sign contracts with tour operators as early as May, keeping prices stable until October. In fact, according to Tsakalakis, the same fixed prices apply from 2019. “However, those who make individual reservations, like the majority of Greeks, must expect at least 30% compared to last year.”

At the same time, as the report observes, “the monthly (net) minimum wage in Greece amounts to 613 euros, the average wage to 1186 euros. With inflation above 11%, soaring energy prices and increasing pressure on the housing market, especially in cities like Athens, many people are reaching their limits.”
