Federal road blocks in RS rise from 15 to 42 in four hours

by

The day after the victory of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), truck drivers carry out dozens of roadblocks in protest against the defeat of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

The number has been climbing rapidly – it rose from 15, at 12:30 pm, to 42, according to the latest PRF (Federal Highway Police) survey, at 4:30 pm. There are also records of three other protests without interfering with traffic on the lanes.

Blockages occur in different ways. There are highways with completely blocked lanes and others where only cargo trucks are barred – cars and live loads are allowed.

In others, the blocking is partial, releasing alternating lanes from time to time. So far, the highways most affected are the BR-386, with eight blockages along about 400 kilometers, the BR-285, which has seven interruptions in 470 kilometers and the BR-470, also with seven interruptions along 225 kilometers. kilometers.

In a message group among gaucho truck drivers, participants classify the movement as “civilian resistance”. In general, they wait for the president to go public to contest the results of the polls — until 6 pm this Monday, almost 24 hours after Lula’s victory was announced, Bolsonaro had not yet recognized his defeat — and criticize statements to the contrary, such as that of the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP) — who, this Sunday, asked for respect for the results of the polls.

At one point, one of the protesters shared Flávio Bolsonaro’s post on his Twitter, thanking voters and talking about “raising your head” and “not giving up on Brazil” and was reprimanded by the others, who ask that the mobilization be maintained.

One of the videos shared by the RS group, but of uncertain location, shows a PRF agent in the midst of protesters on the side of a highway saying: “the only order we have is to be here with you, that’s all”. The group then cheers around the agent.

Asked if the PRF superintendence in RS was oriented to take some kind of attitude in relation to the blockages in addition to accounting for them, the institution’s communication department did not respond. There was also no response on a national directive regarding the protests.

As the Agas (Gaucha Association of Supermarkets), the stoppages still do not worry the sector, which usually have stock for 50 to 60 days of non-perishable or long shelf life.

At the moment, there may be occasional shortages of products such as vegetables, but supermarkets usually have alternatives close by when there are problems with the load of a certain product.

For now, the Setcergs (Union of Cargo Transport and Logistics Companies of RS) decided not to comment on the demonstrations. It only ruled out any link with the blockades and other demonstrations due to the elections.

In the late afternoon, Governor Ranolfo Vieira Júnior (PSDB) established, by decree, a crisis cabinet between state agencies to manage the situation. The group has already held a meeting and will hold another one this Tuesday (1st) in the morning.

According to the Secretary of Public Security, Vanius Cesar Santarosa, the negotiation between the Military Brigade and the protesters ensured that the flow was maintained on most state highways, although with partial interdictions or releases every 10 minutes.

On federal highways, the secretary still seeks dialogue and joint action with the PRF.
