Elon Musk backs off and ‘kills’ new official seal for Twitter accounts

by

Elon Musk said in a tweet on Wednesday that he “killed” the “official” badge for Twitter accounts on the same day the new verification system began rolling out.

“Please keep in mind that Twitter will be doing a lot of dumb things in the coming months,” the billionaire wrote. “Let’s keep what works and change what doesn’t.”

The “official” seal appeared for a few hours under the username of some profiles on the social network. The idea was to serve as a “verification check” for government profiles, companies, media groups, content publishers and some public figures. The profile of Sheetfor example, had the seal during the afternoon of this Wednesday.

Musk backed off just a day after a Twitter product executive announced the feature. In response to an American youtuber, the Tesla CEO said this afternoon that he “just killed him” and that the already traditional blue verified seal will be the true leveler of the social network.

The sudden appearance of the “official” seal confused users of the social network for being similar to the blue seal, which appears on the right side of names.

The back and forth takes place amid the suspension of advertising by several companies on the social network. Brands like Stellantis, General Motors and United Airlines seek to understand how community standards and content moderation will be managed by Twitter’s new management.

In addition, Twitter laid off about half of its staff last Friday (4). On Sunday, however, the company contacted dozens of those employees to ask them to come back, according to Bloomberg News.

On Saturday, the social network updated its app on Apple’s App Store, and began charging $8 for blue ID verification badges, in Musk’s first major overhaul of the social media platform.
