Fiesp President Josué Gomes is quoted to head Lula’s Ministry of Industry

The president of Fiesp (Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo), Josué Gomes, grew up on the betting exchange to head the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC) in the future government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

Son of José Alencar, who was Lula’s deputy in 2002, Josué has already been sought out twice by the PT’s interlocutors. A conversation between the two should take place in the coming days.

For Josué’s allies, this could be an honorable way out of the crisis he faces within the federation. Therefore, the businessman would be inclined to accept the invitation, depending on the structure of the new ministry.

In recent months, Josué Gomes has been under pressure at Fiesp. Opposition unions to the businessman’s management published on Sunday (11) the call for an extraordinary meeting on the next 21st to discuss the conduct of the president of the entity – and which could result in his dismissal.

The leadership of the movement to dismiss Gomes is attributed to the former president of Fiesp Paulo Skaf, who spent 17 years in charge of the industry entity. Josué Gomes was elected on a single ticket supported by his predecessor.

If accepted, Josué will have to deal, as a minister, with his opponents at Fiesp. He has a dilemma. Despite the crisis he faces, he personally runs the business, in Brazil and abroad.

The coordinator of the transition cabinet’s technical groups, former minister Aloizio Mercadante, is considered among PT supporters as certain to lead the BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development).

Lula’s allies claim that an announcement about the BNDES should only take place after defining who will head the MDIC, to avoid “runaways”. In addition to the BNDES itself, Apex could become subordinate to the portfolio.

According to interlocutors, Mercadante expressed interest in the position and would be inclined to accept it, if the invitation is made official. According to reports, the former minister has already sounded out names to compose his eventual team.
