Georgiadis: The traders in the Central Vegetable Market have made their own basket of offers

Minister of Development Adonis Georgiadis spoke to ERT about the interventions in the market ahead of the Christmas holidays, who referred to the “Santa Claus basket” and the “household basket”, stressing that “the basket is not a valuation, but a tool of public competition”.

The Minister of Development spoke, among other things, about the loan financing program announced by the credit institutions, saying that it is the first time that a borrower assistance program is not linked to government grants.

“This is the first time the banks put their hands in their pockets,” said Mr. Georgiadis, responding in this way to criticism that he is covering a small part of borrowers who see installments rise due to the increase in interest rates.

“It is the most that has ever been done,” added the minister, arguing that legislative intervention by the government regarding the banks’ commercial policy cannot exist because the banks are independent.

“Mr. Staikouras, on behalf of the government, is fighting a battle with the banks. The pressure is great within the limits allowed by the European legislation” he added on the subject.

The Minister of Development also referred to the intention of Maria Spyrakis to request the suspension of her party status, arguing that it is a courageous political move.

Androulaki’s line on Kaili is pathetic

Regarding the accusations against Eva Kailis, whom Mr. Androulakis described as a “Trojan horse” of the ND, Mr. Georgiadis attacked the president of PASOK, accusing him of everything he accuses of New Democracy.

“It is not possible for someone to seriously charge Mrs. Eva Kailis in New Democracy” he said and added that on the part of Nikos Androulakis, this is a public admission of inadequacy as a leader of a political party adding that “Androulakis’ line on the Kailis issue is deplorable”.

As for Eva Kaili, who remains in custody until she apologizes for the bribery and corruption scandal, she stated that she is very sad and disappointed with what has happened.

“I hope Ms. Kaili gets out of trouble. We are sorry that a woman who did good by her presence in the European Parliament got involved in this story. I sincerely hope it works out. I’m not happy with what happened. This story is very sad. The fact that we were personal friends does not make us political companions. We have always been rival politicians with Ms. Kaili.”

Create a basket in the Central Vegetable Market

The Minister of Development also revealed that the traders in the Central Vegetable Market have created, on their own initiative, a basket of specific products at low prices, for this reason he will go to congratulate them on the initiative.

“Tomorrow morning I will be in the Central Market where they made their own basket and put amazing prices. I will go to reward them. Well done to them,” he said characteristically.

Simultaneously. referred to the “household basket” inviting citizens through the consumer’s platform to see the evolution of prices per item during these 7 weeks of its operation. “With the figures of the 6th week, we have a reduction of 12.7% from its original price and a saving per month of about 67 euros if someone buys everything from the basket,” he said.

And as Mr. Georgiadis pointed out, “we have let the market operate freely, that’s why we got permission from the Competition Commission. We have not set a price. The cart is not a pricing tool. The basket is a tool of public competition. We publish the list every Wednesday with the supermarket chains.”

Mr. Georgiadis also referred to the non-creation of a basket for butchers and bakeries, which has caused several negative comments. Vassilis Delifilippidis, president of the Butchers Retailers Union of Athens, spoke on the show about unfair competition with supermarkets that operate on Sundays.

“95% of Greek meat production is traded through our butchers. We support them” added the representative of the butchers. For his part, Mr. Georgiadis argued that his goal is for people to get cheap beef and turkey so that people can find the best prices.

“Basket’s effort is for everyone to celebrate. This is the battle,” added the Minister of Development.
