Gas cap: Germany at risk of being in the minority, says German Agency

“My goal is to have an agreement by the end of today,” Czech Industry Minister Jozef Sikela said.

The European Union’s energy ministers aim to agree by tonight on a ceiling on the price of gas, and those who express reservations about the idea, such as Germany, risk being in the minority, the German Agency reports.

“My goal is to have an agreement by the end of today,” said the Czech industry minister. Joseph Sikelawho is chairing the talks.

He said one way to end the months-long standoff between EU countries over high energy prices was to put a compromise proposal to a vote, rather than seek unanimous support.

“This would of course be an undesired result,” said the German Economy Minister, Robert Hambeckinsisting that Germany’s concerns are well-founded.

“No one, least of all me, has anything against low prices in the gas market,” Hambeck said.

“We just know from previous interventions in the market that we have to be very careful not to cause harm in the pursuit of good,” he added.

Also, on her arrival for the meeting of European energy ministers in Brussels, Malta’s energy minister Miriam Daly said EU countries must reach a compromise on the gas cap today and the latest proposal on the table offers a good basis for it.

“What the Presidency is proposing is a very good step in the right direction,” Daly said before entering the meeting.

“It also shows the willingness to reach a compromise today. I am convinced that today we will manage to come to an agreement, I believe that there is the relative willingness. Today is the critical moment.”
