President of PDT must accept invitation to Ministry of Social Security

The president of the PDT, Carlos Lupi, signaled to the team of president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) that he should accept the command of the Ministry of Social Security, since it was initially not attractive to the party, which was looking for a portfolio with more visibility .

Lupi was supposed to give a response to Lula, with whom he should talk between this Wednesday (28) and Thursday (29) for the petista to formalize the invitation and the pedetista to say whether or not he accepts the position.

The PDT president had been talking to the PT in recent days to try to negotiate a portfolio that could strengthen the party for the 2024 and 2026 elections. The idea is that it would be a ministry with action “at the end”.

On Monday (26), PT leaders called Lupi asking him to accept the Social Security, stating that it is a challenge for the next government, as it has many knots to resolve.

The PDT had been demanding space on the Esplanada from the new government. Until last week, Lupi had not been approached by Lula to discuss what the party’s participation would be in the PT’s third term.

Behind the scenes, members of the PDT feared being at the end of the queue in choosing ministries. The initial objective was for the portfolio to help the party increase its strength at the national level. Tourism was seen as a good option, but it was offered to União Brasil, after the name of federal deputy Pedro Paulo (PSD-RJ) faced resistance.

The PDT formally declared its support for Lula in the second round after the PT endorsed three proposals by Ciro Gomes, the presidential candidate who came fourth in the elections. Ciro announced that he would follow the party’s decision, but, in his speech, he criticized Lula and did not mention the PT.

During the campaign, Ciro made a series of attacks on the president-elect, mainly after pressure from the PT for the useful vote. Lupi temporized and recalled the differences between former governor Leonel Brizola and Lula.

Ciro finished the race with 3.04% of the votes, behind Simone Tebet (MDB), who had 4.16%. Lula received 48.43% of the valid votes and the current Chief Executive, 43.20%.

Lula has already announced the heads of 21 of the 37 ministries that will make up the Esplanada. The rest of the names are expected to be released by Wednesday (28). At the center of the imbroglio are ministries such as Cities and Tourism.
