The president of the PDT, Carlos Lupi, accepted the invitation of president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to head the Ministry of Social Security. His name will be announced this Thursday (29), when the name of a new batch of ministers is expected to be announced, finalizing the design of the first echelon of the future government.
The pedetista met with Lula in the morning at the hotel where the president-elect is staying in Brasília. At the meeting, the petista formalized the invitation to Lupi.
“Him [Lula] asked for a lot of effort to end the Social Security queues, including this issue of sickness aid, he wants the deadlines to be the minimum possible”, he said.
Lupi stated that the next conversations will be about second and third-level positions, and highlighted the importance of Dataprev —Social Security Technology and Information Company— and the INSS (National Social Security Institute).
“We have two instruments that are fundamental, Dataprev and the INSS itself. These are extremely technical bodies, which need qualified people, technicians, from the bodies to command them. I intend to streamline them”, he said.
The post was initially not attractive to the party, which was looking for a portfolio with more visibility. The PDT president had been talking to the PT in recent days to try to negotiate a ministry that could strengthen the party for the 2024 and 2026 elections.
“Ministry is always a challenge. It’s not a matter of whether or not we are satisfied, it’s a matter of serving the nation. I think the Ministry of Social Security is torn apart, destroyed. It’s disrespectful to retirees,” he said.
Lupi, who was once Minister of Labor, said he received the support of former governor Ciro Gomes (PDT-CE), a defeated presidential candidate. According to him, Ciro will collaborate with the construction of the party, as a “free soul”.
“I talked yesterday [quarta, com o Ciro]. He fully supports my name. He has his campaign disagreements with President Lula, but now is the time to help Brazil,” he said.
“Ciro will be a free soul, he will take courses, get trained, he will use the best of what he has which are his ideas, his head, his intelligence, to collaborate with the construction of the party and elucidate all the topics he wants to Brazilian society,” he added.
