Economist André Roncaglia is the new Folha columnist

by

The economist specialized in development and economic situation André Roncaglia starts to write a weekly column in Sheet. His texts will be published in Mercado, starting this Thursday (5th), on the website, and from Friday (6th), in the printed newspaper.

Roncaglia, 42, is a professor at the Department of Economics at Unifesp (Federal University of São Paulo), holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from PUC-SP and a doctorate in Development Economics from FEA/USP (Faculty of Economics, Administration, Accounting and Actuarial Science at the University from Sao Paulo).

In his column, he intends to address the challenges of economic development in Brazil, especially in the current context, the demand for decarbonization and towards sustainable development, as well as assessing its impacts on the quality of jobs and the reduction of poverty.

“Despite having suffered a long process of de-industrialization, Brazil has a huge opportunity ahead and can count on large-scale investments. The country has a diversity of resources and an industrial matrix that, despite many deficiencies and dependence on imports, can serve as a basis for the green transition”, he says.

Roncaglia points out that the inauguration speech of the Vice President and Minister of Development, Industry and Commerce, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), makes clear the need for the country to place reindustrialization as the central axis of development, which points to a profound change in relation to to the previous government and which needs to be accompanied.

“The new government has indicated a path in which the State has coordination and provides the planning substance, something that is in line with what is happening abroad. There are unique opportunities that arise in the post-pandemic transition, such as investments in the area of health, and SUS [Sistema Único de Saúde] offers a platform that is still underutilized and that demands an integrated policy.”

In his texts, he also intends to address social inequality in Brazil —without leaving aside the tax issue and the economic policies that affect the distributive issue and that can be implemented to reduce both income and wealth inequality.

Roncaglia is the co-author of “Brazil, an Economy that Doesn’t Learn”, a book written in partnership with economist Paulo Gala, which deals with economic development and the current role of industry based on new global challenges.

The economist also participated and collaborated in the organization, with former Minister of Finance and director of BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) Nelson Barbosa, of “Bidenomics in the Tropics”, which brings together texts on industrial policy and scientific and technological development .

In addition to his academic work, he led the debate panel “Conexão Shanghai” on Youtube, alongside Paulo Gala, Uallace Moreira and Elias Jabbour. The program discussed China’s weight in the global economy and its name was a counterpoint to “Manhattan Connection”.

He also maintains his own channel on the video platform, with more than 111,000 subscribers, in which he discusses economic issues and reacts to videos by other authors, usually with liberal-minded speeches.

“The political moment we are going through, mainly with the worsening of the pandemic, has led the political debate to a degeneration. The challenge that is imposed is to restore the contribution of the economy in the public debate”, he evaluates.
