Panel SA: Trade unionists ask for government action to protect Americanas workers

by

The union centrals say they are going to start, next week, a movement to pressure the federal government to participate actively in the discussions about the future of Americanas workers.

On Monday (30), the Minister of Labor, Luiz Marinho, will meet in São Paulo with union leaders to discuss the matter.

Unionists claim that Lula cannot let the economy be affected, in case there is a collapse of the Americanas with massive cuts that reach more than 40 thousand employees.

“Our fear is that the company will not recover. What are we going to do with the 44,000 workers if there is a mass layoff? We are going to talk to Luiz Marinho to see if the government can help before and not just after the layoffs take place “, says Nilton Souza da Silva, representative of commerce workers in Força Sindical.

Marcio Ayer, president of the Commerce Workers Union of Rio de Janeiro and national leader of the CTB (Central dos Trabalhadores do Brasil), says that the group is open to discussing proposals, but it is essential that the government is on the side of the professionals.

He leads a demonstration scheduled for next Friday (3), in front of the administrative headquarters of Americanas in Rio de Janeiro. CUT (United Workers’ Central), UGT (General Workers’ Union), Força Sindical, CTB, CSB (Central of Brazilian Unions), NCST (New Union’s Central of Workers), Contracs-CUT (Confederation of Workers in Commerce and Services) and CNTC (National Confederation of Commerce Workers).
