Lawyer Carol Proner, wife of musician Chico Buarque, will be advisor to the presidency of BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) in the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). The position focuses on international affairs.
Proner has experience in areas such as international law and human rights. Professor at UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro), the lawyer was part of the transition team for the Lula government in the technical group dedicated to Justice and Public Security.
She married Chico Buarque in 2021. The singer and composer, incidentally, was mentioned by the new president of BNDES, Aloizio Mercadante, in his inauguration speech at the bank on Monday (6). Mercadante announced the presence of the musician among the audience that accompanied the ceremony in Rio de Janeiro.
“I won’t say where he is so as not to disorganize the audience. But he came the way he taught me. Put on sunglasses, a cap, go out into the street that you can walk in Rio”, said the president of the BNDES.
In the same speech, Mercadante also announced the creation of a commission for the bank’s strategic studies. According to him, one of the coordinators of the group will be the economist André Lara Resende, former president of the BNDES and one of the formulators of the Real Plan.
Mercadante defended a “more active” position for the development bank in the coming years, with special attention to industry and smaller companies.
For him, Brazil cannot just be “the farm of the world”, leaving industrial goods behind while agricultural commodities gain more and more space abroad.
“One of the dimensions for the strategic development project is exports, not just agricultural commodities,” stated Mercadante.
“It’s very good, as the dear minister Carlos Fávaro says [Agricultura], that Brazil is the farm of the world. It’s very good, but it can’t just be the farm. Industrial products with high added value are essential for Brazil’s development,” he added.
