The fact that the ND remains, by a large margin from the second party, a dominant force, has not caused complacency
By Penelope Galliou
The fluidity in the center-left, with what is happening in SYRIZA and PASOK, even though Harilaou Trikoupi passed the first round of the internal party elections, still gives the government side room to regroup and rally both to its right and to the center.
The fact that the ND remains, by a large margin from the second party, a dominant force, has not caused complacency in Piraeus Street and Megaro Maximos.
After all, the poll percentages are far from the intended percentage that will bring a new self-reliance to the ND in the national elections, when they take place. A percentage that is far from the one obtained by the ruling faction during the European elections and consequently efforts are focused on restoring and increasing it.
Knowing that the deterioration of a government, during its second government term, is increasing, but also that citizens’ dissatisfaction is present in society and that the same citizens can easily “succumb” to the sirens of populism and inexpensive promises, the government is determined to turn in two directions.
On the one hand, to centrist voters who appear dissatisfied with certain government policies, but also to those who flirt with parties to the right of the ND, which exploit sensitive issues such as national and immigration issues.
In the first category of centrist voters, everyday life and its improvement is considered to be the “key” to their re-approach, as is the pursuit of comparison and exposure of political opponents who claim from the same pool.
Institutional issues such as the postal vote, or the imminent revision of the Constitution, are strong arguments from the government side against the “political discredit” – according to government officials – that PASOK demonstrated, in relation to its timeless positions during the previous period and is unclear if he will change his stance even after the re-election of Mr. Androulakis.
At the same time, it is estimated that the events in Koumoundourou work or will attempt to work in the “revival” of the “anti-SYRIZA” front, which in all the last election contests, had a reinforcing influence on the percentages of the ND.
This was also the aim of the relevant report of the government representative during the press briefing, when referring to the developments in SYRIZA and the exclusion of the Kasselakis candidacy, he stated that he was not surprised by the “democratic” procedures, which we saw in the previous days. “Those of us who know them and especially those who have learned about them from universities, are not surprised at all”, commented Pavlos Marinakis.
“The reality is that at this moment the citizens know that for every issue they have they turn to the only strong and organized pillar, which is the government” commented the Minister of State, Makis Voridis, emphasizing the situation that prevails in society in relation to the existing political scene.
At the same time, the Maximos Palace is also preparing a counterattack to its right, where these parties, especially the Hellenic Solution and the Voice of Reason, appear strengthened in the recorded measurements. An increase, which government officials attribute to slanders spread by the heads of these parties against government policy, mainly on national issues and immigration.
In this light, Aphrodite Latinopoulou was also targeted by the government representative, whom he classified in the extreme right of Europe on the occasion of her views on immigration policy, stressing that “Ms. Latinopoulou, after her election to the European Parliament, did not choose to join in the European People’s Party, not even in Mrs. Meloni’s party, but she joined Orban and Le Pen. Mrs. Latinopoulou officially belongs to the European Far Right.”
