The previous record holder for the largest “nugget” of gold found in British waters dates back to 1808. This is a 59 gram piece discovered in Cornwall

The largest “nugget” of gold that has been discovered in Britain for 500 years was recovered from a river in Scotland, as the “Sun” writes. It was named “Douglas Nugget” and it was discovered two years ago, but its lucky owner kept its story a secret until today.

Experts value it at £50,000 and say it is the biggest nugget found in British waters for 500 years.

The ‘nugget’ was discovered by a method called ‘sniping’ in a Scottish river bed. The 40-year-old hobbyist, who has spent 20 years panning for gold, said: “I was following a crack in the subsoil and found about 2 grams of fine gold. I called my friend over to take a look and we both guessed that it weighed around 5-7 grams. It wasn’t until I removed it that we realized how big it was. I took off my glove and picked it up, jumped out of the water and yelled “Bingo!” to my friend We were both amazed and couldn’t believe it. I have never seen anything like this in my life».

The gold is kept in a safe as its owner has not yet decided what to do with it. And the location where it was discovered is a closely guarded secret.

Gold expert Leon Kirk noted that “this is an exciting and unprecedented find. I’d say it’s worth at least £50,000, but as it’s rarer than an Aston Martin or a Faberge egg, a billionaire could easily come and pay a lot more for it».

Before the Douglas Nugget, the previous record holder for the largest gold nugget found in British waters dates back to 1808. It was a 59 gram piece discovered in Cornwall.
