The protagonists of ‘Bros’ don’t have to be actors. Moreover, there is no regular rehearsal. Only one deal: they are here to carry out instructions
How much violence can one take? Is the law above all? How far is arbitrary power from authoritarianism? Deafening noises of explosions and guns alternate with poetic images full of contentious symbolism. Great iconoclast of the stage, the Italian director Romeo Castellucci eturns to Roof of the Onassis Foundation from September 28 to October 2 with the “Bros”a disturbing, thrilling ritual, a monumental farce about free will that takes our breath away, and twenty-three men on stage, both victims and executioners.
The protagonists of ‘Bros’ don’t have to be actors. Moreover, there is no regular rehearsal. Only one deal: they are here to carry out instructions. No matter how strange or incomprehensible they are. Because the men “recruited” by Romeo Castellucci dress and behave like instruments of order, carrying out the orders they receive, through headphones, throughout the performance. There is no room for improvisation. They must obey.
The director Romeo Castellucci, also creator of scenery, lighting and costumes, is known worldwide for his approach to the theater that is based on the totality of the arts and aims at a comprehensive understanding of the work. His theater proposes a dramaturgy that overturns the primacy of literature, making the stage a complex art form composed of unusually rich images, expressed in an understandable language like those of music, sculpture, painting or architecture.
As disturbing as it is genius, ‘Bros’ unfolds in a condensation of space-time: in an unbounded present and an uncharted ‘somewhere/anywhere’. The Law is reduced to its visible-invisible co-protagonist on stage in the crowd. Romeo Castellucci sets up a grand ontological farce that challenges us to reconsider our relationship to freedom, justice, violence, individual responsibility, critical thinking, impudence and obedience. The theater is transformed into an ontological landscape from which humanity marches as an obedient brotherhood, ready at any moment to attack its own flesh.
The show is suitable for ages 16+ as it contains nudity and use of extended violence. During the performance, water, fire, smoke, paint and stun guns will be used. Due to the loud music throughout the performance, earplugs will be distributed for the audience.
