Shakira has denied any wrongdoing
Spanish courts have ordered the music superstar to stand trial, Shakira, for tax fraud. The Colombian singer has been told she could be jailed for up to eight years if, of course, she is found guilty of an alleged £12million tax fraud.
Shakira, although she has denied the specific allegations, today Tuesday, September 27, 2022, it became known that she will be tried for tax fraud, according to AFP.
More specifically, the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer is accused of pretending to live abroad and using a company to avoid fulfilling her tax obligations from 2012 to 2014, despite having moved to Barcelona in 2011 to be close to Pique.
Last month, prosecutors in Spain called for a stiff prison sentence if the singer goes to trial.
Shakira confirmed she had rejected an out-of-court deal, believed to have included admitting wrongdoing, after being accused of defrauding the Spanish State over a three-year period between 2012 and 2014.
She was charged with six separate counts of tax fraud totaling €14.5m (£12.18m) following a lengthy investigation.
In addition to the eight-year prison sentence, state prosecutors want Shakira to pay a fine of €23m (£19.2m) if convicted.
Inspectors spent more than a year investigating the singer, even visiting her favorite hairdressers in Barcelona and checking social media, to try to prove she had spent enough time in Spain.
They concluded that she had spent 242 days in Spain in 2012, 212 days in 2013 and 243 days in the country in 2014. However, Shakira has denied any wrongdoing. Her public relations firm Llorente y Cuenca said in a statement earlier this week: “She believes in her innocence and has chosen to leave the matter in the hands of the law.”
Responding to the allegations, Shakira insists she was legally resident in the Bahamas at the time and did not spend 183 or more days a year in Spain, which is the limit to be considered a tax resident.
