The series “The Westworld” has been one of the best science fiction stories for years and we owe this to the script and creation of Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan. This year the two creators return with a new dystopian series, “The Peripheral”, based on the best-seller of the same name by William Gibson.
The actress plays her Flynn Fisher, a young woman trying to make ends meet in America. She takes care of her sick mother and works several hours a day so that they have an income. She herself is very intelligent and the people around her do not fail to remind her that she has been wasting her brain and talent all these years by staying behind. She, however, has her own special way out of reality.
Together with her younger brother, Burton, they make a living playing and testing various VR simulations. When a very good offer comes to Burton to try a new simulation, he puts Flynne in the game, who plays her brother. The simulation takes place in the London of the future, 70 years from the present day. Flynne has a mission to fulfill, but when things go wrong, the two brothers suddenly find themselves embroiled in a case from which they will not be easy to escape.
A grounded story
Even when they seem like they belong in the realm of science fiction, there’s something about Peripheral that keeps us grounded. This is none other than the human dimension of the story, the family situation and the resulting tensions, but also the concern for the future not only of the vast London, but of the whole world. Like any other sci-fi series or movie, Peripheral aims to make us consider the consequences of our actions for the future but also to take a sneak peek at how this bodes rather ominously.
