The actress, already a mother of an 11-year-old son, talks openly about what prompted her to make this decision
The 44-year-old actress January Jones she was a guest on the Race to 35 podcast, where she revealed the reasons that led her to this decision.
“I already had my son and I just wanted to reduce any pressure on myself. As women, we make a plan in our minds about how we imagine our lives, the possibility of marriage and starting a family. I had an idea too, but nothing ever goes according to plan. I wanted to do it to get rid of stress,” the actress explained.
As a single mother herself, Jones admitted she can’t imagine herself going through the process of having a baby again. She confides, however, that freezing her eggs provides her with some confidence for the future, in case she meets someone who would like children.
“What if I meet someone and they want kids? I’ll say: So I’m old and I can’t do it? I could use frozen eggs or a surrogate. I just want to keep all options open.”
“When you start, you feel really lost”
Speaking about her personal experience, Jones described egg freezing as an emotional as well as a financial issue. “I didn’t have anyone and I didn’t know anyone who did. My doctors didn’t help. The information they gave me was chaotic. This makes you feel really vulnerable and lost before you even start. It’s complicated”.
In addition, the actress was faced with her own child, to whom she had to explain her decision. “One day, my son came in when I was giving the injections [πρόκειται για ενέσεις ορμονών που συνταγογραφούνται με στόχο την παραγωγή πολλαπλών ωαρίων πριν τη διαδικασία κατάψυξης] and asked me what I was doing.
I didn’t want him to think I was sick, so I tried to explain to him. Later he asked me ‘so how many siblings will I have?’. He was upset.
The 44-year-old actress also spoke frankly about another dimension of this process, the financial cost. As he admitted, this is a costly decision, with no certain outcome. “At one point, the doctor told me there was a 15% chance the eggs would survive, which made me wonder if it was all worth it. I thought: Why am I paying if it’s not going to work?’
The importance of the social environment
Finally, Jones emphasized the importance of having a supportive environment for the woman who makes the decision to freeze her eggs.
“It’s important to have emotional support. That’s what I really miss, not having a partner. I wish there was someone I could share everything with at the end of the day,” he concluded.
