Yiannis Boutaris emphasized that “it is a document for the production of sparkling wine in the region, from 1880 onwards and it was synonymous with champagne. ”
In the history of Moschofileros, the aromatic variety of Mantineia, the reporter returns Kostas Spyropoulos with his book “THE PIONEERS OF MOSCHOFILEROU”, texts-documents of winemakers from 1859 to 1934″, Iolkos Publications, Athens 2022.
The presentation of the book took place on Wednesday, November 9 at the Goulandris Museum of Natural History by Yiannis Boutaris, Dino Stergidis, Konstantinos Lazarakis, in the presence of the author.
The event was opened by Aris Tselepos on behalf of the Tselepo Estate Winery, which sponsors the publication, saying that “this book is of great value both for Greek wine – it can be a narrative but also an identity – and for us, the winery of Tegea and Mantineia, which operates in the areas where the Papanikolaou family was also historically active, as described in the book”.
The book contains the written evidence and oral testimonies, which were the guide for the script of the film. Book and film complement each other, however viewing does not require reading the book, nor does the publication require the reader to have seen the film.
Yiannis Boutaris emphasized that “it is a document for the production of sparkling wine in the region, from 1880 onwards and it was synonymous with champagne. This book together with the documentary, which has been released, are historical documents for the industry”.
Konstantinos Lazarakis, wine master said that “I had to reach the age of 52, to go to a cinema in Tripoli to learn this shocking story of some people who made sparkling wine from Moschofilero as we are doing it again now, a century later. If it wasn’t for Mr. Spyropoulos to write this particular book, I would have been ignorant, and I think quite a few of us.”
The coordinator of the event Mr. Koulelis said: “I read, in this very condensed book, impressive things that confirmed to me that without a past there is no future. Without knowledge of history we cannot move forward”
The organizer of the OINORAMA exhibition Dinos Stergidis said that “Mr. Spyropoulos’ book is important because it contributes to the creation of a narrative of Greek wine”.
The oenologist Panos Zoumboulis said “I met Kostas Spyropoulos through his book. I am amazed by the information and it really is a document.”.
Winemaker Stelios Boutaris (Estate Kyr-Yiannis) said that “Mr. Spyropoulos’ book is a very important piece of evidence. It contributes to the record of Greek wine”.
Dina Spyropoulou, winemaker (Spyropoulos Estate) said: “this book is a publication of the Tselepos estate and is dedicated to the memory of my brother, Apostolos Spyropoulos, who was a winemaker and oenologist at the Spyropoulos estate. It is very important and not very common, to see in Greece, two estates in the same place and in general two companies with the same product working together harmoniously and beloved with the main goal of promoting Mantineia, Moschofileros and Greek wine in general”.
The author points out in the book that the answer to the question: “a chimera or a realistic plan to become the Arcadian Campania of the East?” ” is that the necessary conditions were indeed met for the region to evolve into a large wine production and export center. This vision was undermined by the absence of a government policy for the development of wine production. The entrepreneurs of the time had succeeded in penetrating the international markets through the World Fairs, as from 1882 to 1937 they swept the gold awards at the fairs in Europe and America, but they faced state indifference.”
