Everything you need to know about azelaic acid

by

If you have acne or pimples, you have probably thought of various treatments and ingredients. But are you aware of azelaic acid and its benefits for your skin?

Azelaic acid is preferred by dermatologists as it is gentle on the skin and supple, while helping much more than acne pimples. That’s why he deserves more recognition. So let’s see what it is, what it offers and how it is used.

What is azelaic acid?
Azelaic acid is a dicarboxylic acid. Helps exfoliate the skin and is synthesized by yeast in a natural way. It is produced, that is, naturally on the skin but can also be prepared in the laboratory as well as from seeds and cereals. In addition to providing deep exfoliation to the pores, it also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It is also available both in prescription form on the recommendation of your dermatologist or in a market product, in a smaller content. It can be found in leave-on topical treatments and is available in gel, foam and cream forms, designed for use on various areas of the body.

Benefits of azelaic acid for the skin
Azelaic acid has multiple benefits as it treats a variety of problems related to skin rashes and inflammation. Specifically, it offers the following:

  • Exfoliates gently. It penetrates deep into the pores and removes dead skin cells that cause dull appearance and clogged pores.
  • Fights acne. It has antibacterial properties. In fact, it is a bactericidal for P. acnes, which causes acne.
  • Reduces inflammation. Soothes the irritation caused by inflammation.
  • Gives a uniform tone to the skin. Inhibits tyrosinase, which is an enzyme that leads to hyperpigmentation. It is effective in post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from acne outbreaks and can also affect melasma.
  • Treats rosacea. Azelaic acid can help with clogged pores, inflammation and secondary infections caused by rosacea.
  • It is safe for pregnant women. It is one of the few treatment options for acne, rosacea, clogged pores or pigmentation that is generally safe for pregnant women.

Possible disadvantages of azelaic acid
It is possible to use a slight irritation during its use, such as stinging or tingling. But because it is a mild acid, few users experience side effects. If you see any more severe side effects, such as swelling of the face, difficulty swallowing or breathing and urticaria, you need to see your doctor, as it may indicate an allergy.

How it is used
Whether you use it in a prescription product or in a market, its use is as follows. Apply a thin layer of the product on clean, dry skin twice a day, morning and evening. If you have sensitive skin, it is best to use it once a day, day after day.

Regardless of the type of product you use (foam, gel or cream), apply a pea-sized amount on the face and neck, spreading evenly. To absorb and perform even more effectively, first apply a product with AHA (such as glycolic or lactic acid), BHA (salicylic acid) or retinol, which will “open” the skin to accept azelaic acid more easily. Then followed with a moisturizer.

Of course, do not forget your sunscreen with a protection index of at least 30, the next morning.
