The Academy that awards the Césars has decided not to invite film award nominees accused of “violent acts” to this year’s ceremony, after it was revealed that the Sofiane Benasser, the protagonist of the film “Forever young” (Les Amandiers) is prosecuted for rape.
“Out of respect for the victims (even alleged ones, in the case of a preliminary investigation or non-final decision), it has been decided not to feature persons prosecuted by justice for violent acts,” the Academy said in its statement.
If any of the award nominees is being prosecuted, for example, for an offense of a sexual or sexist nature, or has been convicted, they will not be invited to the ceremony on 25 February, nor to any of the side events. It will also be forbidden for anyone else to speak “on behalf of that person” at the same events, even if in the second round of voting it is decided to award them a César award.
The decision applies to the 2023 ceremony and was taken after Sofian Benaser (who was not named in the announcement) was prosecuted at the end of November. for raping and abusing his partner.
Benasser starred in Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi’s Les Amandiers (his first major film role) and was listed in the approx. 30 of this year’s “revelations” of Caesars. However, his name was hastily withdrawn from this list when it became known that he was being prosecuted by French justice.
The Academy is considering amending its regulations, which is expected to happen within the first half of the year.
