Actor Jeremy Renner, 51, best known for playing Hawkeye in “The Avengers,” underwent surgery on Monday after a snowplow accident on New Year’s Day. He remains in a hospital’s intensive care unit in critical but stable condition.
The actor’s rep told PEOPLE that he suffered chest trauma and orthopedic injuries after being hit by a snowplow at his home in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. He was the only victim of the accident.
The actor had a serious injury to one of his legs that caused massive blood loss, but a neighboring doctor managed to put a tourniquet on until paramedics arrived. He was taken by air ambulance to a hospital.
A source tells TMZ that the actor’s injuries are extensive to his leg and other parts of his body. He was alone at the time of the accident and was trying to fight his way out of his house after a heavy snowstorm on New Year’s Eve.
A rep for Renner said the family is in the hospital with the actor and he is receiving excellent care. Family members thanked firefighters, rescuers, doctors, nurses who cared for the star and fans for their love and support.
