The Italian newspaper recalls that both American museums and Pope Francis have announced that they will return to Greece fragments of the Parthenon Sculptures and concludes by underlining: “the pressure at the international level is increasing more and more and it is more and more likely that London will somehow finally give in”.

A publication of the Italian newspaper La Repubblica states that “Greece and Britain have never been so close to an agreement on the Parthenon Sculptures”.

Referring to an article in the British newspaper The Telegraph, he adds that “the president of the British Museum and former Finance Minister George Osborne allegedly offered an olive branch to Athens: a long-term loan of the Sculptors, in turn sending them to Greece in exchange for other antiquities which will exhibited in London”.

The newspaper adds that “the interim arrangement proposed by Osborne would be a major communication victory for the Greeks and a basis for improving the agreement, which may take a more definitive form in the coming years.”

“A wind of optimism has been blowing over the past two months, following some ‘top secret’ meetings in the heart of London in recent weeks,” the Rome paper added.

However, sources close to the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports yesterday denied a report by the Bloomberg agency which also stated that the two sides are “close to an agreement” for the gradual return of the Parthenon Sculptures as part of a cultural exchange.
