“This exhibition is an opportunity to discover Islamic culture and learn about it,” said OMA architect Iyad Alsaka

The showrooms of the first Biennale of Islamic Arts in the Western Hajj Terminal at Jeddah Airport, is the first project of the renowned architectural firm OMA in Saudi Arabia. A series of fiberglass curtain tents, suspended from steel pillars, aim to complement the King Abdulaziz International Airport, the architecture of the American office Skidmore Owings & Merrill.

OMA designed two distinct spaces: beneath the terminal’s open canopy he created a “desert-like landscape”, a reference to the Hegira, the Prophet’s journey from Mecca to Medina; it consists of sand-coloured slopes and sloping walls for the exhibition of works of art while engendering a “sense of exploration”. In addition, an enclosed space consists of a series of rooms where works of art are presented.

“This exhibition is an opportunity to discover Islamic culture and learn about it,” said OMA architect Iyad Alsaka. “More than 200 ancient objects are on display, some of which are being seen by the general public for the first time. There are also works by contemporary artists from Saudi Arabia and other countries in the Middle East and North Africa to countries such as the United Kingdom and South Africa, giving a new dimension to the timeless rituals of Islam,” he added.
