The American mezzo-soprano, who has been awarded three times with a Grammy, is coming to Greece for the first time
The opera superstar Joyce DiDonato chooses the Athens Concert Hall as a stop on her international tour for its presentation “Eden” project (“Edem”), which travels from 2022 to 2024 to 45 cities and 5 continents and is presented for the first time in Greece (with Greek surtitles), the Tuesday, May 30 at 20:30, in the Christos Lambrakis Hall.
The three-time Grammy-winning American mezzo-soprano takes us on an emotional journey that speaks to people’s hearts, seeking to reconnect with nature. Joyce DiDonato motivates us to change our attitude towards the planet and suggests that we experience a holistic musical experience that extends beyond concert venues. It transports us to an oasis full of songs and seeds‒real seeds that can be planted, to be distributed to audiences outside the concert hall‒and urges us to take environmental action in streets, gardens, wherever our voices can be heard.
The “Eden” project is a musical journey through four centuries in dreamy compositions by Francesco Cavalli, Aaron Copland, Christoph Willibald Gluck, Georg Friedrich Heindel, Charles Ives, Gustav Mahler and others. Among them, the song “The First Morning of the World”, which was commissioned by Oscar winner Rachel Portman and premiered in the context of “Eden”, as well as “Seeds of Hope” (“Seeds of hope”), the anthem of “Eden”. In fact, this song is the result of the collective effort of the children of the Canterbury Choir (United Kingdom), who participated in an environmental awareness workshop organized on the occasion of “Eden”.
Joyce DiDonato is accompanied by the Il Pomo d’Oro Orchestra conducted by Maxim Emelianchev, who also performs the harpsichord parts. Dancer and choreographer Manuel Palazzo takes part as an actor. With them, the Youth Choir of El Sistema Greece under the musical instruction of Vaia Papagiannopoulou. The direction is by Marie Lambert-Le Bien, and the lighting is by John Torres.
Joyce DiDonato’s appearance at Megaro is part of the “Great Performers” series and is sponsored by Mytilineos Energy and Metals. Ticket pre-sale has started.
