Family stories, romantic imbroglios, honeymoon betrayal and even lust for a wooden object are some of the stories narrated in the podcast Não Inviabilize. Déia Freitas, the name behind the narration, guarantees that she doesn’t have a favorite story and that she even enjoys the hairy and unconventional ones.
But, as the channel for sending it is open, she tells in an interview with F5 which has already received many controversial messages. The hand itches to press play on the recorder and narrate the story, but conscience weighs more. “Some people have already sent crime stories, things you say ‘this isn’t good enough’. When I’m in doubt, I send it to my lawyer, then he says: ‘For God’s sake, don’t tell that’.”
But telling stories about others is nothing new in Déia’s life. At age 15, the podcaster was writing profiles for a newspaper in Santo André, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, where she was born and raised. The job ranged from writing memoirs in the obituary section to being amorous matchmaker and matching someone up through love classifieds.
“To write these stories, people went to the newspaper in person and I helped them. So I had to talk to them a little, understand to write there. I don’t know if I joined many couples over time, but I remember that there was a guy who always announced that he was looking for a girlfriend. Then I suggested that he take another photo, change his haircut, and he never came back”, he recalls.
Despite acting as a podcaster and storyteller, as she defines herself, Déia is a trained psychologist, but has never practiced the profession. During graduation, she worked at a position at the university for a scholarship, and when she graduated, she entered the world of fashion, where she remained until 2015.
Vegan and defender of animal rights, career stagnation propelled her to become a “cat sitter” (a “baby sitter” for cats). The new job didn’t require anything from Déia, just that she play with the pets of a rich crowd in the Jardins and Vila Nova Conceição regions, in São Paulo.
During her free time, she already told some stories on Twitter and, at the suggestion of a friend, she decided to use her voice to narrate a message she had received. The first venture was through Telegram. “One day I had drunk a few more cachacinhas and said: ‘Oh, I’m going to record a story’. I recorded it and then I didn’t stop”, she says.
Now one of the most listened to podcasts in Brazil, ranking fifth on the Spotify audio platform, Não Inviabilize started with R$100 and a cardboard box. “Priscila, my friend, was the one who encouraged me to create this project. Shortly before the pandemic, I decided to start recording in a cardboard box with my cell phone. Her husband knew how to edit, so I took the only money I had and gave it to her. for him. And that’s how the work was born, he’s also my editor nowadays.”
The work with just four hands lasted two months – currently, in addition to her and her friend’s husband, there are three more people working on the podcast. “I received stories all the time, but I was a cat sitter for rich people. It was like that until last year, when I left that job. legal person”.
Today, the podcast’s good subscriber base — around 30,000 — allows her to live a life different from the one she grew up in and manage to afford trips for herself and her family. “I don’t think it’s fair that I enjoy something without the people around me also enjoying it. We’ve always been on the same level, which is zero. So now that I can offer a little culture and comfort, for that I’m the only one going to live this?”
