The highest sale price that has ever been realized worldwide for his work Yannis Tsarouchis (1910-1989), VERGOS Auctions succeeded yesterday during the “New Greek Painting and Sculpture” auction which took place at the Zappeion Megaro.

In a room packed with art-loving public and with participations via phone and internet, the largest auction house in Greece confirmed the sale of the work “May” of Yannis Tsarouhis, at the price of 475,542 euros with a starting price of 200,000 euros. As stated in the announcement, the work belongs to a masterful series of 12 paintings created by the great master, one for each month of the year, drawing his inspiration from the Louis Philippe decorations on a gold background and the French Crucifixion images of the 15th century.

With 76% of the works available in the room and 85% with the after sale finding buyers, the auction had a turnover that exceeded 2 million euros.

Among the many works that significantly exceeded the original estimate price, the work “Untitled” by Apostolos Georgios stands out, which tripled the original estimate price (sold for 69,302 euros with an initial estimate of 20,000 euros), the work “Entre ciel et terre” by Pavlos (Dionysopoulos ) which fetched €41,126, more than doubling its original estimate of €18,000, Takis (Vasilakis’) ‘Signal’ (1972) which sold for €120,978 with an original estimate of €80,000, as did ‘Composition with Female Figures and an Angel’ and the accompanying draft, by Konstantinos Parthenis, sold for 95,770 euros with an initial estimate of 60,000 euros.

The collectors once again showed confidence both in our house and in the value and timelessness of modern Greek art”.
