Fatboy Slim
By the mid-90s, Norman Cook, as Fatboy Slim’s real name is, was a figure to be reckoned with in the British alternative scene. Seduced as a teenager by the craze of punk, he devoted himself to the bass both as a member of youth bands and as a DJ. He rose to fame as the bassist for 80s indie underdogs The Housemartins and once the group disbanded, he returned to his student days in Brighton, slowly entering the electronic path.
His first big hit was the timeless “Dub Be Good To Me” with the relatively short-lived Beats International format – it reached No.1 in the UK and US Billboard Dance charts, showing the limitless possibilities of making something new by sampling The Clash , Ennio Morricone and The SOS Band.
In 1996, however, Norman Cook became Fatboy Slim. And he was a key exponent of the big beat trend that shook Great Britain together with groups like the Chemical Brothers. He was ready for the next big step. He succeeded with a huge single that was heard in the last corner of the planet, The Rockafeller Skank.
An album followed with some of the tracks that defined the 90s (“Praise You”, “Right Here, Right Now”). The album You’ve Come A Long Way Baby has since sold over 5 million copies worldwide, its tracks have been used everywhere (TV, cinema, video game commercials), Cook has become an in-demand star of world caliber.
The 25 years that followed found him giving some of the most impressive live shows the planet has seen: at the Great Wall of China, in front of millions at the Carnival of Bahia in Brazil, at the biggest festivals around the world, in Vegas and at home of Brazilian Big Brother. Always with a spectacular visual show to accompany him, always with his own exuberant presence to entertain as much as the audience.
