At age 90, Michael Caine has confirmed his official retirement from acting. The veteran British actor announced the news in an interview with the BBC’s “Today” program this Saturday (14).
“I keep saying I’m going to retire. Well, now I am,” Caine said. He had previously hinted that his retirement from filmmaking was near in an interview with The Telegraph last month, saying he was “sort of” retired.
Caine reflected on the success of his career and the roles he would likely be offered at his age.
“I realized I made a movie where I played the lead and it got incredible reviews,” Caine said. “The only parts I’m probably going to get now are from old men, 90 years old, maybe 85. And I thought, ‘Well, I might as well get away with all this — I’ve gotten wonderful reviews. What do I have to do to get over this? ‘”
He added: “You don’t have leading men at 90, you’re going to have young, good-looking guys and girls.”
However, he sees value in representing older people on screen: “With me, it’s not as diminutive as you think,” he explained. “I remember when I was young talking to 90-year-old old men, and they weren’t like me at all. They were little old men with stooped shoulders… And I thought, I’m not like that, and that changed.”
Caine’s career spans multiple decades and genres. He became a household name in the 1960s, starring in classic films such as “Zulu” and “The Italian Job.” He has collaborated with Christopher Nolan several times, playing Alfred Pennyworth in the director’s “Batman” films and also appearing in “Inception” and “Interstellar,” among other Nolan titles. He appeared in comedies such as “Alfie” and “Austin Powers in The Man with the Golden Member.”
Caine has received numerous honors throughout his career, including the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performances in “Hannah and Her Sisters” (1986) and “The Rules of Life” (2002). Caine was also knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2000.
