The engineers of Thessaloniki were informed about this complex mechanism, and the new revelations about its functions
It accurately calculates the phases of the Moon, predicts solar and lunar eclipses and through an application all information is confirmed on the official NASA website. The Antikythera Mechanism is the first analog computer of amazing technology in world history, built 2,200 years ago and it performed the exact calculation of the position of the Sun, the Moon and the planets in the sky. The engineers of Thessaloniki were informed about this complex mechanism, and the new revelations about its functions, at an event held by the TEE/TKM in collaboration with the Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Projection of the Antikythera Mechanism “Ioannis Seiradakis” of the AUTH and HELLINIKI Environment & Culture COMPANY, Thessaloniki Branch.
“Colleagues from abroad argued that the mechanism was not a scientific instrument, but an educational tool for the astronomical schools at the time. We as a group argued exactly the opposite and with the help of God we proved that we were right”, points out enthusiastically the Professor Emeritus of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of AUTH, Director of the Interdisciplinary Research and Projection Center of the Antikythera Mechanism “Ioannis Seiradakis” of AUTH, holder of the Chair of the European Research Area in the Digitization of Cultural Heritage of the Cyprus University of Technology and member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, Kyriakos Efstathiou.
As he explains, “we made a new model that doesn’t differ in anything from the old one, except for the front face where the dates and zodiac constellations are located, on which we imprinted today’s reality so that we can control it. At the same time, we created the movement of the mechanism on a computer, in virtual reality. This gave us the opportunity to be able to make predictions hundreds of years ahead and back. It turned out to be extremely accurate. we just make a prediction that is as spectacular as a solar eclipse. Then in the application there is a question mark, when we throw it, the computer connects directly to the NASA website, in which the fact is confirmed”.
On the outer plates and inside the mechanism, explains Mr. Efstathiou, there were astronomical, geographical and technological inscriptions. Thanks to the innovative investigation techniques used, texts lost for over 2,000 years were read! All inscriptions are written in Greek characters. The complexity of the Antikythera Mechanism is far greater than that of all man-made devices over the next millennium.
Regarding the underwater research carried out and the Marine Imprinting Group, the Professor Emeritus of the Department of Agronomists & Topographical Engineering of AUTH, President HELLENIC SOCIETY of Environment & Culture, Thessaloniki Branch, Vice-President of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Projection of the Antikythera Mechanism “Ioannis Seiradakis” spoke » of AUTH, Konstantinos Tokmakidis. Specifically, he emphasized that, “the mechanism has been designated a milestone in technology by the Society of Mechanical Engineers of America, which has over 250,000 people as members. We’re really discovering more and more new techniques and processes that you can reveal through the mechanism, such as finding Easter, when it falls, and finding solar or lunar eclipses with very high accuracy.”
The archaeologist, post-doctoral researcher, member of the Scientific Council of the Antikythera Mechanism “Ioannis Seiradakis” Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Promotion of the Antikythera Mechanism, Alexandros Tourtas, developed in his speech the archaeological framework for finding the Antikythera Mechanism. In 1900, as he said, 123 years ago, a group of spongers from Symi spent a few days on the island of Antikythera and discovered that there were bronze statues at the bottom, this was the beginning of investigations and bringing to the surface some parts of the Mechanism of Antikythera.
