It was a year when Greta Gerwig “broke” many records with the worldwide success of the film “Barbie” peaking when it crossed one billion dollars at the global box office.

Gerwig is set to break new ground again next May when she takes on the role of jury president at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.

Announcing the news, the festival described Gerwig as “a heroine of our modern times” who shook up the “status quo”.

I am amazed and excited to serve as the jury president of the Cannes Film Festival. I can’t wait to see what journeys she has in store for us allGerwig said in a statement and added.

I love movies – I love making them, I love going to them, I love talking about them. As a cinephile, Cannes has always been the pinnacle of what the universal language of cinema can be…being in a dark room full of strangers watching a brand new movie is my favorite part».

At the age of 40, she will also be the youngest president of the Festival since Sophia Loren, in 1966 at the age of 31.

“This is an obvious choice, as Greta Gerwig so boldly embodies the renewal of world cinema that Cannes represents every year,” said Festival President Iris Knobloch and Artistic Director Thierry Fremaux in their joint statement.

According to Deadline the 77th Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 14 to 25, 2024.
