Emma Stone belongs to that category of actors who have been lucky enough to play many different roles (The Amazing Spider-Man, La-La-Land, Cruella, Maniac). According to her, however, as different as these roles were, none of them resemble the character of Bella Baxter, the heroine she plays in his new film. Giorgos Lanthimos, “Poor Things”.

Actor and director maintain a friendly relationship, which, it seems, also translates into a good professional collaboration. This is their second work together, as they first met on film in “The Favorite” of 2018. Lanthimos is known for his special films, impressing every time, with each new work of his. Special films, however, are composed of demanding roles. The new film, based on Alasdair Gray’s novel of the same name, is a little reminiscent of him “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley, decomposed and recreated, through a new perspective.

In the new feature film, the director and cast try to explain who Bella Baxter is – both as an “experiment” and as a woman. The film tells the story of a medical student in Victorian London, Max McCandles, who becomes an assistant to surgeon Dr. Godwin Baxter then meets and falls in love with a young woman, Bella, who has a special characteristic: Her intelligence develops remarkably quickly. His doctor reveals that he saved a pregnant woman who committed suicide by replacing her brain with that of her living baby.

Stone revealed that when she and Lanthimos started talking about Poor Things in 2017, she was intrigued to play a woman with “a brand new mind.” “I wanted to play Bella because I felt like it’s a role that speaks to the acceptance of what it is to be a woman, to be free, what it means to be confident, but also to be a little confused about the world,” she confessed. “It’s an incredibly difficult role, perhaps the most difficult I’ve taken on“, added the actress.

Working with Emma was why it was so exciting for me to make this film. I don’t know how it could have been done without her“, said the director for his part.
