Hollywood star tells fans ‘the only way to protect the swift parrot is to stop logging native forest trees’
Global superstar Leonardo DiCaprio called for an end to the logging of native trees in Australia’s forests to protect the habitat of the endangered swift parrot.
The Hollywood actor told his 62 million Instagram followers that the destruction of the parrot’s breeding habitat in Tasmania continues, despite experts estimating that only 750 swift parrots remain in the wild.
“The Australian government has promised to prevent further disappearances. Conservationists continue to encourage them to keep their commitment to zero extinction”DiCaprio wrote.

The swift is a migratory species that winters in Victoria and New South Wales and in the summer nests in forests scattered across the island state of Tasmania, depending on where its main food sources flourish.
These birds have an average length of 20 centimeters and a weight of only 45 grams.
A guide published by the CSIRO in 2021 estimated the population had fallen to around 750, down from 2,000 a decade ago. Studies indicate that it could become extinct in 10 years if measures are not taken to improve its protection.
In his post the actor referred to last week’s court victory for the Bob Brown Foundation, which secured a temporary ban on logging in a forest area south of Hobart.
