Xuxa Meneghel participated in the 7th edition of the Yes to Racial Equality Award, held by Instituto Identidades Brasil (ID_BR) this Sunday (26). The event rewarded people, initiatives and organizations that promote and accelerate racial equality and the presenter was one of the special guests.
During the presentation, Deb, ID_BR’s anti-racist artificial intelligence (AI), questioned the presenter about one of her biggest hits “Brincar de Índio”: “I saw some videos of you dressed up as an indigenous person singing phrases like: ‘Indian make noise , uh’. I thought it was a bit inappropriate, do you want me to explain why?”, he commented, leaving Xuxa embarrassed. “I understand many of the errors in these recordings, in this type of performance, even though it is a playful attempt to approach the subject with children,” she said.
The IA continued: “Currently, we understand that the term ‘indigenous’ is more appropriate, because ‘Indian’ generalizes the original peoples. It was just a term that the colonizers gave in total disregard for the cultures and languages that were already here. Indigenous they don’t make noise. Indigenous people are more than 300 people who speak several languages and have different forms of expression of their ethnicities that we need to learn.”
On stage, young Isa even played with the presenter. “Hey, Xuxa, I’m not trying to judge you, but what song is that?”, she joked. And Xuxa replied: “You’re already judging”, making the audience laugh.
