Musician Daniel Gonzaga, grandson of Luiz Gonzaga, went public to clarify that he did not authorize the version “Vem Galopar”, by Juliette Freire. He says he wasn’t even consulted.

According to Daniel, the rights to the song “Pagode Russo”, written by Gonzagão and João Silva, are owned by the record label Universal Music. “Nobody in my family authorized anything, no. It’s their authorization [Universal] and they do whatever they want”, explained Daniel in a video published on his social networks.

Via the press office, Juliette defended herself by throwing the ball to the record company. In a statement, the singer’s advisor stated that “the publishing assured Juliette that the families of Luiz Gonzaga and João Silva had authorized the release” and that they even “liked the version”.

However, according to Daniel, no one in his family heard or approved “Vem Galopar”. He also spoke for João Silva’s heir, Lúcia Silva. Luiz Gonzaga’s grandson also said that he found the version disrespectful.

“We have been paying attention to a dismantling of culture that has been happening for a long time”, said the artist. “I’m against record companies doing what they want. Of course, the right is theirs, the property is theirs, the music is theirs. But there is a moral right. And changing João Silva’s lyrics, from what I’ve seen, I think the something new always comes and has to come, but I found it a bit disrespectful.”

“So, you do what you want, just don’t say that the family authorized it. And please, pay attention to the dismantling and depredation that is happening in our culture”, warned Daniel.

Universal Music Brasil was contacted by the report to say whether, after all, it sought out the families, as Juliette says, or not, according to Gonzaga. The label did not respond at the time of publication.
