Pop star Britney Spears, 39, is freed from the tutelage of father James P. Spears, 69, after 13 years of control over her life, career and finances. The process was closed this Friday (12) by a judge from Los Angeles, who agreed that the singer is now able to control her assets and that the circumstances that led to her guardianship in 2008 no longer apply.
“In this case, the court concluded that this was voluntary guardianship and there is no need for a declaration of capability,” said Judge Brenda Penny during the Los Angeles County Superior Court hearing, meaning Spears would not have to testify.
Britney’s father was suspended from his role as a Conservative in late September. The judge said having him in charge of her daughter’s property was “unsustainable” and reflected a “toxic environment.”
Penny agreed to let accountant John Zabel take over as Spears’ conservator, while the star’s lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, prepared to try to end the deal altogether.
In June, the singer broke her silence about guardianship for the first time in 13 years and gave two days of dramatic testimony. She said the guardianship was “abusive” and had been used to “ruin” her life.
Britney Spears delivered a passionate speech before a Los Angeles judge, harshly criticizing her father as her parents and lawyers listened. “I’ve been in denial. I’ve been in shock. I’m traumatized,” Spears said during the remote hearing. “I just want my life back.”
The singer asked for the end of the guardianship “without having to be evaluated”. “I really believe this guardianship is abusive,” said the singer. “I don’t feel like I can live a full life.”
She told the court that she felt “enslaved” by her father, Jamie Spears. “I’m so angry I can’t sleep and I’m depressed,” she said, according to Entertainment Tonight. “I want to be heard. I want changes and I want changes in the future. I deserve changes,” said the singer.
“I just want my life back. It’s been 13 years and it’s enough. It’s enough and it doesn’t make any sense. I’m done. I want to sue my family, to be totally honest with you,” the singer said in June
Britney also told the court that she wanted to have more children, but was prevented from doing so. “I have an IUD in my body now that won’t let me have a baby and won’t let me go to the doctor to get it out,” she said, by ET. “I want to be able to get married and have a child. I was told with guardianship that I was not able to get married and have a child.”
“I lied and told the whole world that I’m fine and I’m happy. It’s a lie,” Spears said during the explosive June hearing, as she called for her father to be arrested.
“I thought maybe if I said enough, maybe I could become happy because I’ve been denying it,” Spears said. “I’ve been in shock. I’m traumatized. You know, fake it until you get it. But now I’m telling the truth. It’s my wish and my dream that this all end.”
This Friday, hours before the hearing, Britney and fiance Sam Ashgari shared an Instagram video of both smiling and wearing #FreeBritney t-shirts. Earlier this week, the singer wrote about the audience in an Instagram post. “This week is going to be very interesting for me!” Spears wrote in the post. “I didn’t pray for anything else in my life!
Prior to that, the pop star used social media on Nov. 3 to attribute her mother, Lynne Spears, 66, to the idea behind the action that led her to live under her father’s tutelage. The singer used the phrase “the most dangerous animal in the world is a silent and smiling woman” to illustrate the post, which was deleted a short time later.
“The moment I smile and realize I haven’t done this in a long time!! My mom gets so worried and says, ‘You’re acting weird… What’s wrong with you?’ name is Britney Spears … nice to finally meet you!'” began Britney, who says she has been reborn and thanks her mother for “getting out of the way” of her and allowing her to live her own life.
“My dad may have started guardianship 13 years ago, but what people don’t know is that my mom was the one who gave him the idea! I’ll never get those years back. She secretly ruined my life, and yes , I’m going to complain about her and Lou Taylor,” the singer accused, referring also to the former spokesperson for the Spears family and also the artist’s former business manager.
