For many years Alexia has been one of the first names in the musical life of Greece and Cyprus with dozens of hits and many successes.

She represented her home country Cyprus at Eurovision in 1987 with the song “Aspro Mavro” taking 7th place and enjoying huge success for 22 years.

Until she decided to change everything and left for a permanent settlement in America.

After a long time we saw her on the set of the show “Truths with Zina” talking with Zina Koutselinis about everything she decided and her life today.

“I divide my life between Cyprus and New York. Today I am in Athens and I am very happy. I have lived here 22 years. The memories are coming back, even though I’ve gotten used to the rhythms of the city.” Alexia said, and after showing a dedicated video for her, she continued:

It is a blessing that I am an artist. I wake up and decide, today what I feel, that I have to do and I start and I create it. I don’t have someone to tell me what to do, to pressure me. I decide, so I’m very happy. I am in a state of joy and fulfillment. With the problems that every person can have”

-Have you always been like this in your schedule or have you always had this balance?

“I never thought about what it would sell for. It’s a blessing to have your work reach the world but I’ve been interested in serving the music and making music for it and I’ve always been interested in the arrangements on my records. And without orchestrations I don’t even sing live.

What I understood in life is first to discover our own nature, appreciate us and then forget ourselves and live to give to the society as a whole. Selflessly”

-You stayed in the centers for a while but you chose to go to a different way of expression, more difficult how did you make this decision. Did something happen?

“Nightclubs were a big school for me. Because we artists are all called to be good at what we do every night. Whether we are sick, upset, tired, exhausted, we don’t want to be there… But this practice is very beneficial and maybe I would have done some things differently but the music always called me. Experimental music, avant garde, voice improvisations that I do. And with Mikis Theodorakis, when he came to see me and I asked him timidly, he answered me, of course. All this was calling me and I had to go learn, study, live. This”

-I feel that you have left a part of yourself behind, your rest, your life constantly dealing with music…

“Music for me is like breathing. But always my personal life is also professional and that’s why I do what I love every day”

– Yes, but within the personal there is also camaraderie, there are relationships, there is family, there are other things

“In principle, we don’t live together every day and I won’t say that on TV. I don’t miss anything. I live a beautiful life in whatever country I am through friends”
