Portuguese court condemns woman for racism against children of Giovanna Ewbank and Bruno Gagliasso

by

The Court of Portugal sentenced the woman who made racist insults to the children of Brazilian actors Bruno Gagliasso and Giovanna Ewbank in 2022. Adélia Barros, 59, was sentenced to eight months in prison, but will serve her sentence in freedom, as long as she does not commit the same crime for four years.

The information was revealed by the Portuguese newspaper Público. The judge also ordered compensation of 14 thousand euros (around R$85 thousand), an amount that, according to the newspaper, is half of what had been requested in the case (35 thousand euros).

On July 30, 2022, on a beach in the Costa da Caparica region, in Portugal, Adélia Barros insulted Titi and Bless, who, at the time, were 9 and 7 years old, respectively. She was filmed screaming in a restaurant, referred to the children as “filthy black people” and asked them to “go back to Africa”.

According to the conviction, she will also have to pay 2,500 euros (approximately R$15,000) to the SOS Racismo association and undergo mandatory hospitalization for treatment for alcoholism.

Giovanna Ewbank spoke about the decision on social media this Thursday (15) and spoke of a “victory against racism”.

“We know that this victory happens because we have visibility and because we are white. We know that we are heard more than any black mother or father who is still silenced. We know. And we cannot stop – especially if our privilege makes a difference in a fight. That’s what our role, this is the role of whiteness”, wrote the actress on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter).

“Yes, racism doesn’t give a vacation, but today it seems to give a truce with yet another historic condemnation,” he continued. “This is the first time that Portuguese law condemns a person as a result of racism.”

Ewbank thanked Portuguese lawyers Rui Patrício and Catarina Mourão for their work and said he was very confident in the country’s justice system.

“Once again we are moved, once again we are grateful for the public commotion and the Brazilian press and our Portuguese friends. And once again we must say that we need to remain vigilant, because racism continues, continues to diminish, injure, kill. And we cannot weaken before him”, concluded the mother of Titi, Bless and Zyan.
