Mônica Bergamo: Dental plans increased by 13% in beneficiaries between 2019 and 2021, says study

A study by the Instituto de Estudos de Saúde Suplementar (IESS) shows that exclusively dental plans registered a 13% increase in new beneficiaries between 2019 and 2021, from 25 to 28 million members.

The number of procedures performed in clinics and offices, on the other hand, fell by 5% in the period. The data are gathered in a study that will be released this Friday (22).

According to the analysis, last year operators spent BRL 3.2 billion on dental health care — a 16% higher value compared to 2020. Of all dental procedures performed in 2021, 78 million (45%) were preventive care .

WAITING ROOM

Following are topical fluoride applications, with 32 million procedures, and educational activities, with 15 million. The latter occur, for example, when the dentist gives instructions on brushing, flossing and disease prevention, being more common in routine consultations.

RECOVERY

The IEE study also shows that in 2019, before the Covid-19 crisis, 183 million dental procedures were performed in Brazil through supplementary health. After the arrival of the coronavirus, that index dropped to 154 million, and in 2021 it rose to 174 million.
