“Children without known risk factors are also prone to serious illness and hospitalization, so attention should be paid to vaccinating all children between the ages of 5 and 11, taking into account the SARS-CoV-2 epidemiology nationwide,” warns the European Center. Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) in the Interim Public Health Assessments for Vaccination of Children against COVID-19.
The ECDC report concludes that children aged 5-11 years who are at risk for serious COVID-19 disease should be considered a priority group for vaccination, as is the case in other age groups.
The hospitalization rate and incidence of COVID-19 cases in children aged 5 to 11 years have increased, but remain at much lower levels in children than in adults.
Vaccination of children can not be considered a substitute for vaccination of adults, the report said. In this context, increasing the vaccination rate in the eligible adult population remains the top priority of COVID-19 vaccination campaigns, the Center notes.
