Once it 40% of deaths in Greece attributed to the coronavirus in 2020 was purely due to covid-19, as shown by the latest data from ELSTAT.

The new data essentially reinforces the argument that in the effort to fully record the effects of the pandemic, Greece registered as Covid deaths many losses which could reasonably be attributed to other pathological causes, with the result that its position in the global rankings worsened.

According to the detailed data of ELSTAT, which followed the instructions of the World Health Organization, in the first year of the pandemic 5,028 people lost their lives in our country having been exposed to the coronavirus.

However, out of them only 2,061 had no underlying disease, so their death can be directly attributed to the virus. In contrast, the remaining three-fifths of those who died had severe comorbidities.

More than 1,450 suffered from diseases of the circulatory systems, while almost 500 had been diagnosed with some form of cancer. Circulatory problems and neoplasms were, after all, the two main pathological causes of death in Greece both in 2020 and in the five-year period 2015-2019.

The discrepancy between Covid deaths and the number of sufferers who had serious underlying diseases shows that while the virus undoubtedly contributed to many deaths, it was not necessarily the determining factor. But this could not be reflected in the epidemiological data, so many of the multifactorial losses were ultimately attributed to the pandemic.
