How likely is it that patients with Omicron will be admitted to the ICU – What an American study shows

by

Patients treated during the coronavirus Omicron variant wave have a lower chance of getting seriously ill and need admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), in relation to the Delta era, according to a new study from the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). To a large extent, this is attributed to the growing percentage of vaccinated patients admitted to hospitals.

The researchers, who published the study in the CDC’s Morbidity & Mortality Weekly Report, compared 339 patients treated with Covid-19 in July-September 2021 (when Delta was dominant) with 737 patients in December. 2021-January 2022 (when Omicron ruled).

It was found that in its most recent period Ομικρον about half of the patients died during their hospitalization (4%) compared to the Delta period (8.3%). According to researcher Dr. Matthew Mounts, “overall the Omicron period team was less likely to be admitted to the ICU and also less likely to need invasive intubation, compared to the Delta period team.”

The analysis shows that a higher proportion of patients treated with Covid-19 during Omicron domination were vaccinated, compared with patients treated during Delta. Researcher Peter Chen said: “Apart from the protection that the vaccine offered to people who were admitted to the hospital when Omicron was predominant, we also saw that the addition of the third dose seemed to be particularly important in reducing the severity of the disease. especially among elderly patients. “Vaccinated patients treated with Covid-19 during the predominance of the Omicron variant continued to be more likely to have serious complications and a higher risk of respiratory failure than those vaccinated.”

CDC researcher Dr. Michael Melgar pointed out that “a clear pattern emerges when studying Omicron period patients and their vaccination status in relation to the percentage of those who have been admitted to the ICU: The more vaccinated one is – unvaccinated, single dose , with two or three doses – the better the outcome for the patient “.
