Opinion – Julio Abramczyk: Ukraine’s hidden enemy

by

Thousands of people crowded into Ukraine’s railway stations, crowded trains and few people wearing face masks. Outside, the snow and the cold of the merciless winter.

The incidence of Covid-19 will likely increase in this group with a large number of mothers and their children, in addition to many pregnant women.

The population of Ukraine is currently facing two enemies: the invading Russian army and the new coronavirus.

The Russian invasion recently began to harm Ukrainian doctors seeking to track the spread of the coronavirus in the territory.

According to the WHO (World Health Organization), from January 3, 2020 to February 28, 2022, there were 4,835,476 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Ukraine, with 105,948 deaths.

In the period before the war, an increase in the number of cases of the virus had already been observed due to the low vaccination coverage.

In these early days of the war in Ukraine, due to the large number of people who have passed to neighboring countries (the estimate is about 1 million), there is a possibility that, in addition to the coronavirus, they may eventually have other infectious diseases.
